The character LCD is the most durable idea in displays: a fixed grid of character cells, a controller command set every firmware engineer already knows, and a module that can be reordered unchanged for a decade. HZY builds the full standard grid — 8×2, 16×2, 16×4, 20×2, 20×4 and 40×2 — on COB construction with ST7066U-class controllers, in standard STN builds and in VA for products whose face needs the black-background look.
The formats

Living with a character module
Two practical notes from production. First, the interface question — parallel vs I2C backpack — is worth deciding deliberately; our 1602 interface guide compares pin cost, speed and multi-device behaviour. Second, big-font variants (the catalogue's H1602L) solve the readability problem for ageing-user products without leaving the 16×2 ecosystem.
Character modules are the anchor tenant of our COB line: screw-mount boards, matched backlights, 100% inspection. If a legacy character module in your product has been discontinued elsewhere, send its outline drawing — the grid, controller class and outline are usually enough for us to match it.
