About this module
In a custom programme the digit and icon layout is drawn for one product, a tooling is cut, and the resulting display shows exactly what that product needs to say — nothing else — at very low power and, in volume, very low unit cost. The parameters in the listing define the production window: fluid family, drive voltage, viewing direction and connection method are the four decisions every segment project starts with, and all four are fixed at drawing stage.
The economics follow from the tooling model: a modest one-time tooling cost, then very low unit prices at volume, with a design cycle of about 3 days for drawings and about 2 weeks for samples once the layout is approved. Segment glass is also the longevity option — a tooled design can typically be re-ordered unchanged across the product's life, subject to material availability.
