STN (super-twisted nematic) is the step up from TN when a monochrome display has to carry graphics or be read at an angle: more multiplexing headroom, better contrast, and background tints (yellow-green, blue, grey) that products have used as a visual identity for years. FSTN adds a compensation film that cleans the background towards neutral black-and-white — the version most modern instruments specify.
Where our STN/FSTN range sits
- Graphic COB modules — the 128×64 STN positive grey transmissive COB module is a platform-listed example, a direct visual upgrade over TN builds of the same format (see the 128×64 family page). The 2004 20×4 character module ships on STN yellow-green glass.
- FSTN COG modules — 128×64 FSTN COG builds, the 192×64 1/64-duty FSTN COG, and the 240×128 / 240×160 FSTN COG modules at the top of the graphic range.
- DFSTN transflective — a double-film variant used in the negative transflective 128×64 COG module for sunlight-readable instruments.
- Segment glass — STN and FSTN are standard options in the custom segment glass list (TN/HTN/STN/FSTN/VA), chosen when a segment face needs the wider viewing cone.

Choosing between TN, STN and VA
Price rises TN → STN/FSTN → VA; so do contrast and viewing performance. If the readout is straight-on and cost rules, stay TN. If a graphic module must read clearly across a bench or a factory floor, FSTN is the balanced answer. If the face is a design feature — deep black, wide angle — that is VA's job. The detailed comparison is in VA vs TN vs STN.
All STN/FSTN modules are built on the same COG/COB lines, 100% inspected, and available with matched LED backlights in white or colour.
